WOOKEYS EARN FIRST CANADIAN SCREEN AWARD NOMINATION FOR 'A NATION AND HER MOTHER'

It’s one they’ve been hoping to scratch off their list for some time now. The Wookeys have earned their first Canadian Screen Award nomination for ‘A Nation and Her Mother’ which is a 6 minute, one-shot take that retells the 400 year history of the Red River Métis. The piece was produced as part of APTN’s Indigenous Day Live broadcast with partners, Animiki See and Manito Media.

The Wookeys are deeply honoured and proud to be recognized for this piece which in many ways, feels like the culmination of the work they’ve been producing on the Métis since their very first film, Mémère Métisse, in 2008 which aired nationally on CBC, APTN and Radio-Canada and opened the 2008 ImagineNATIVE Film Festival. In the 15 years since, they have produced films like La Légende de la cloche, Le souhait d’Augustine, A Life on the Line, series like À chacun son Métis and À la sauce Métisse, and special projects like Rosie’s Story (which got over 1 million views) and 100 Métis, among other work that has featured stories about the Métis people of both past and present.

The producers would like to thank DP, Matt Schween, researcher, Casey Gibb and Denise Darling on creative development. They also owe much to their commissioning partners on the piece, Animiki See and Manito Média and would like to express gratitude to Jean Teillet who consulted on script and is the author of The Northwest is Our Mother, the book that inspired the piece.

The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards will take place in April in Toronto.
